  • Madison, James.  Letter signed (7¾" x 9¾"), Montpellier, Dec. 24, 1831 .  Interesting content.  Addressed to the famous early autograph collector Rev. William B. Sprague.  Sprague apparently asked Madison to help him obtain an autograph of Mr. Blair.  Madison says he would help if he "knew the proper sources."  Suggests that Sprague drop a line to future President John Tyler: "Mr. Tyler a Virginia Senator in Congress will I believe be able to ascertain it, and doubtless, equally willing to attend to your wishes." He explains that he needed assistance to write the letter (which Madison signed but is not in his hand):  "I am laboring under a severe Rheumatism which among other affects cripples my fingers as you will perceive and obliges me to use a borrowed pen."  Several archival repairs on verso to repair splits along folds, but the recto is fine and no text is missing.

  • Nixon, Richard.  Extraordinary content typed letter signed as Vice President (7" x 9"), December 31, 1958, to the renowned columnist Walter Winchell.  The future President in a rare moment of candor expresses a fear of dentists:  "Going to a dentist to me is a greater ordeal than facing a mob in South America!"  This refers, of course, to the incident where an angry mob rocked his limousine while visiting South America.  Very fine condition.
